January-The dead of winter but not of golf - January 2004
By David La Pour

First off I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize for the late January tip. You see I was on one of those extended holiday/golf trips (that I eluded to in the December tip) doing research for the Minnesota golfer on how to keep it going in the winter. I found some interesting and persuasive reasons to go south among other ways to keep your foot in the door in regards to your golf game. Here is a list of suggestions for January and February as we watch the snow melt.

 • Florida, Arizona, Texas, California, Hawaii or any other warm weather state is eager for your golfing business. There are over 80,000 hits on the web if you type in "winter golf trips" in your search engine. Also check out Orbitz, Travelocity, or Expeida.com web sites for cheap travel.

 • Golf cruises are an excellent way to break up the travel golf and adventure. I have been the "resident golf professional" on 8 different cruises from Halifax Nova Scotia to Aruba and they are really fun. I would give lessons/clinics while at sea and then when in port play golf with whoever wanted to play at the local golf course. All the arrangements were through the shore excursion desk and usually cost around $100.00. The only warning is that the golf courses on the islands are not as nice and the ones in Minnesota but the views are great!

 • The Super Bowl is in Houston this year and they have a lot of courses open all year long. As a matter of fact, every year Super Bowls are in warm climate location in late January. Hmmm.

 • Locally I know of a dome in Maplewood, Cottage Grove, and a few other places. Check the yellow pages for domes and shot simulators which are kind of fun.

 • Practice at home or in the heated garage. The Winter Series that we are doing at Oak Marsh in Oakdale is teaching all sorts of players how to practice correctly at home in a controlled environment. February's clinic will be using Body Balance trainers to help students work on their full swing.

 • Just a note on the traveling, most places have rental clubs so if you don't want to lug your clubs around leave them at home. I hope these ideas help keep your golf game moving forward and also keep you warm. Good luck and I'll see you next month!
