Spring Cleaning/Free Lesson Month - April 2005
By David La Pour
As winter becomes a memory and spring fills the air, it's time to bring the clubs out of hibernation. I'd suggest starting by getting the dirt off the clubs from last fall, cleaning the grips with a wet towel (or get new ones), washing that dirty golf towel, cleaning the bags, shoes and balls, putting away the winter clothes and breaking out the golf clothes you got for Christmas.
Just as your equipment needs a little TLC, so will your golf game this spring. Students sometimes ask me how to get back into the swing of things and I tell them "Putting and your short game are usually the first things to leave you, and the last to come back after taking time off." Therefore I suggest working a lot around the greens in April to get your technique, touch, and confidence back. Notice the order in which I said that. If you work on good technique and touch with your putting, chipping, and wedge shots, your confidence (and full swing) won't be far behind.
If you're not sure of the proper technique for a particular shot, WP golf and the PGA of America, in partnership with Golf Digest, are offering free lesson month in May. These free 10 minute lessons offered at all five WP properties are just long enough to cover the basics of one shot, so choose carefully. To sign up for a lesson, call the WP golf club nearest you. If your looking for something more substantial than a 10 minute lesson try one of our programs listed below:
Individual/Group private lessons by PGA/Institute instructors
One and two day golf schools
Weekly clinics at each golf course
Link Up 2 Golf adult education classes
EWGA Ladies only clinic
Junior clinics, camps, and leagues
Professional club fitting and demo days
For more information on the above programs, check out the Institute's web site or call any of the WP golf shops. Enjoy your spring, and I'll see you at the course!
