Holiday Golfer - December 2003
By David La Pour
Do you want to make a golfer happy for the holidays? Get them ready for next year by helping them with their game now. Of course the immediate fix is the dozen golf balls, golf clothes, or even the new set of clubs under the tree Christmas morning. The long-term fix may be a series of lessons, golf trips (especially in the winter, see January's tip), or even take up the game yourself if you don't already play. One of the fun things about golf is that it's never too late to start playing. You may have to check your pride at the pro shop door but it's never too late to start playing.
As a golf professional I have enough golf paraphernalia to open my own proshop so I sometimes cringe when I get the pink golf shirt or a poster of Tiger Woods. If your shopping check out the suggestions below for your golfer:
Golf books that lean toward human-interest stories rather than instructional manuals... $10-$30
Membership to a handicap service such as NGN.com. or MGA.org - $20-$30
Lesson or Golf School gift certificates. $40-$500
Pro shop credit/gift certificate for purchasing balls, gloves, hats, etc... $10-$100
PGA club fitting along with a custom set of clubs. $1,000-$2,000
Air plane tickets to a golf destination…$1,000-$5,000
The look on their face Christmas morning... priceless
As for the golfers reading this tip don't forget the same things may apply to your non-golfing gift givers whatever their passion may be.
On behalf of the WP Golf Institute Instructors we wish you a safe and happy holiday season.
